RED PILL OR BLUE PILL

IF THE SYSTEM HAS TAKEN YOUR ATTENTION AND YOUR INTENTION THERE IS NOTHING LEFT WHICH IS YOURS

Your mid-life crisis, strategic review, or next chapter, does not have to be a crisis but can be one of recalibration or indeed counterbalance. That’s want happens when you shift from productivity to purpose.

There are many books currently topping the best seller list about how live in a world which is increasingly dysfunctional and disappointing, monetising our attention and intention to ‘win’ by producing more and buying more before we die.

More alarmingly in pursuit of productivity we loose our personality, we become our profession and become what we do rather than who we are. Our left brain cranks out a rhythm, cookie cuts a pattern, repeats a behaviour for which it is rewarded whilst the right brain struggles to make sense of it all feeling that a tree is more than timber, animals are more than food, the sea is not a place for refuse, and our life is more than work.

I recommend these books…

THE ORGANIZED MIND: Thinking Straight in the Age of Information Overload by Daniel J. Levitin, Luke Daniels, et al.

STOLEN FOCUS: Why You Can't Pay Attention--and How to Think Deeply Again by Johann Hari

FOUR THOUSAND WEEKS: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman

The reason we have weekend and holidays is they make us more productive. Indeed some businesses have found that working 4 days per week instead of 5 or 6 can actually increase productivity and profit, as well as consumption. Time off work is simply to recharge the batteries ready to be reloaded into the system and discharged in pursuit of delivery of more stuff.

What if your next weekend or holiday was not simply trickle charging with serotonin, dopamine or endorphins just to be able to face the next challenge mindlessly taking instruction from social media, political propaganda or corporate evangelism, and soon the AI which will be your friend, coach, boss and task master.

TAKING THE RED PILL

In the 1999 science fiction film "the matrix," directed by the Wachowskis, the protagonist, Neo, is presented with a choice between two pills by the character Morpheus…

RED PILL: Taking the red pill will "awaken" Neo to the truth of reality, allowing him to see the world as it truly is, which is a simulated construct controlled by machines. Choosing the red pill means facing the often uncomfortable truth and the challenges that come with it.

BLUE PILL : Taking the blue pill will allow Neo to remain in the simulated reality of the Matrix, continuing to live in ignorance and comfort without the knowledge of the true nature of the world. It means choosing blissful ignorance over harsh reality.

The "red pill vs. blue pill" choice has since become a cultural metaphor, often used to represent the decision between confronting an uncomfortable or challenging truth (taking the red pill) and remaining in blissful ignorance (taking the blue pill).

RE CALIBRATION AND COUNTERBALANCE

We speak of work-life-balance but are they in balance? Isn’t work hard and play hard both hard? Is working on yourself, working on your hobbies, working on your relationships still just working? Is that it, simply endless hard + work?

In the backdrop of our fast-paced, technologically advanced lives, we often forget the essence of being human - to feel, to think, to connect, and to be in sync with our surroundings. Our minds crave intellectual stimulation, our bodies seek health and balance, and our souls long for purpose and meaning. In essence, we need a retreat that empowers us to embark on a transformative journey, one that encompasses all aspects of our existence and encourages us to flourish as whole beings.

There is nothing wrong with a deckchair with sun, sea, sand and sangria but how about instead a retreat, designed to provide an enriching, holistic experience. Various activities, each aimed at enhancing different aspects of the self. Imagine beginning your day with yoga and meditation, stimulating your mind with a climate studies course, expressing your inner creativity through dance, and ending the day with a peaceful reflection session. A unique blend of the tranquillity of island retreat.

BeTheBusiness LEAN canvas and my derivative the 8p for pitches

LEAN CANVAS

Here is a quick explainer of each Lean Canvas block (and in the order to go through them):

1. Problem

Each customer segment you are thinking to work with will have a set of problems that they need solving. In this box try listing the one to three high priority problems that your customers have. Without a problem to solve, you don’t have a product/service to offer.

2. Customer Segments

The problem and customers can be viewed as intrinsically connected — without a customer in mind you can’t think of their problems, and visa versa.

3. Unique Value Proposition

A value proposition is a promise of value to be delivered. It’s the primary reason a prospect should buy from you. A way to get your head around this is to think about why are you different and why should your customer(s) buy/invest time in you.

4. Solution

Go and meet customers, identify their issues and discuss possible solutions. I recently advised someone as follows.

Before spending hours developing a product + building system and hiring staff, check with the client(s)
1. What do they need (Product)
2. How much (Volume/Demand)
3. What price (Revenue)
So the No1 thing is meet with clients and find out. Then when you are confident start the work to develop solutions to meet their needs.

5. Channels

Channels are ways for you to reach your customers. And remember that in the initial stages it’s important not to think about scale but to focus on learning. These may include social media and physical media, networking groups, websites, and any other physical or virtual meeting or communication space. However chose relevant spaces, advertising a premium product in a glossy magazine makes sense. promoting a luxury service in a cheap free-sheet does not. Which channels contain the right audience for you offer. LinkedIn, Facebook and Snapchat all appeal to different groups.

6. Revenue Streams

How you price your business will depend on the type of model it is, however, it’s quite common for startups to lower their cost, even offer it for free to gain traction, however, this can pose a few problems. The key being it actually delays/avoids validation. Getting people to sign up for something for free is a lot different than asking them to pay. There is also the idea of perceived value.

7. Cost Structure

Here you should list all the operational costs for taking this business to market. How much will it cost to build / landing page? What is your burn rate — your total monthly running costs? How much will it cost to interview your customer segment? How much do market research papers cost? etc. You can then use these costs and potential revenue streams to calculate a rough break-even point.

8. Key Metrics

Every business, no matter what industry or size, will have some key metrics that are used to monitor performance. The best way to help with this is to visualise a funnel top down that flows from the large open top, through multiple stages to the narrow end. Think perhaps  in terms of a sales funnel, what are the things you need to measure on the path to success (and path to profit). The list below is not correct, but a prompt for what matters and is relevant to your offering.

How many people noticed my product or post
How many people liked my product or post
How many people engaged with product or post
How many people attended a demo
How many people bought or singed-up
How many people bought again
What are fixed costs
What are marginal costs
What is price
What is profit

9. Unfair Advantage

Unfair advantage can be insider information, a dream team, getting expert endorsements, existing customers etc. So rather than think about adding something like “commitment and passion” as an unfair advantage (because it is not), think about what you have that no one else can buy.

MY DERIVATIVE THE 8P FOR PITCHES

PROBLEM
What is the problem, need, issue, situation?

PROGNOSIS
Why does this need address? What happens in default mode? What positive or negative issues arise?

POSSIBILITIES
What are the options: 1. Do nothing 2. Wait 3. Do X 4. Do Y

PROPOSAL
What is the recommended approach: People, Process, Tasks

PLAN
How can this be done: Roles, Goals, Controls, Deliverables and Dates

PERSON
Who are the people who can do this: Skills, qualifications, experience

PRICE
What are the funding options and cost v benefit considerations

PRACTICAL ACTION
What do you need to do now, to get started?

When Is It Just a Conversation, and When Is It True Collaboration?

Meetings are a staple of professional life, but not all meetings are created equal. While some are productive and lead to actionable results, others can feel like an endless conversation with no clear direction. Building on our previous exploration of conversation and collaboration, let's delve into the nuances of meetings to understand when they are merely conversational and when they foster genuine collaboration.

WHEN MEETINGS ARE SIMPLY CONVERSATIONS

Meetings can easily drift into mere conversation when the following elements are present...

a. Lack of Agenda: Without a clear agenda, meetings can become unstructured talking sessions that do not result in tangible outcomes.

b. Dominated by Complaining or Blaming: When participants engage in wingeing or finger-pointing without focusing on solutions, the meeting's value diminishes.

c. No Clear Goals or Objectives: When the purpose of the meeting is vague, it's difficult to reach any meaningful conclusions or actions.

d. Passive Participation: If participants are waiting to be rescued or only seeking validation of their opinions, the meeting will not lead to anything substantial.

e. Excessive Length: Long and meandering meetings that lack focus often end up being fruitless discussions rather than productive collaborations.

WHEN MEETINGS FOSTER COLLABORATION

On the other hand, meetings become platforms for collaboration when they include...

a. Well-Defined Agenda: A clear and concise agenda ensures that everyone understands the purpose and the expected outcomes of the meeting.

b. Focus on Solutions: Meetings that center on problem-solving, goal setting, and actionable plans foster genuine collaboration.

c. Participation and Engagement: When everyone is actively engaged, contributing ideas, and taking ownership of tasks, the meeting becomes a dynamic collaborative effort.

d. Time-Bound Objectives: Utilizing SMART targets can keep the meeting on track and make sure that it leads to tangible results.

e. Regular Follow-Ups: Scheduled follow-ups ensure that the decisions made in the meeting are implemented, turning the collaboration into real progress.

STRIKING THE RIGHT BALANCE

The key to transforming meetings from mere conversations into fruitful collaborations lies in planning, engagement, focus, and accountability. Here are some strategies to strike the right balance...

Preparation: Distribute the agenda beforehand and clarify the meeting's purpose.

Active Facilitation: Ensure that the meeting stays on track and encourage participation from all attendees.

Result-Oriented Approach: Define what success looks like for the meeting and work towards it.

Accountability: Assign tasks and deadlines, and schedule follow-ups to keep everyone accountable.

Conclusion

The difference between a meeting that's simply a conversation and one that leads to collaboration is not always clear-cut. It depends on intention, structure, participation, and execution. By recognizing the signs of both and applying strategies to foster collaboration, organizations can make their meetings more effective and valuable. In an age where time is precious, making every meeting count is essential for driving progress, innovation, and success.

CONVERSATION VS COLLABORATION: STRIKING THE RIGHT BALANCE

In today's rapidly evolving service economy, the terms "conversation" and "collaboration" are often bandied about in boardrooms and break rooms alike. But what do these terms mean, and how do they influence our approach to work and productivity? As we transition from an age of information to one of action, it's vital to understand the distinction between the two and strike a balance that optimizes both discussion and delivery.

1. CONVERSATION

Conversation is an essential component of human interaction and often forms the foundation of relationships and understanding within an organization. However, it has its pitfalls:

a. Talking: Engaging in endless dialogue without reaching concrete decisions can lead to stagnation.

b. Wingeing: Complaining without offering solutions often results in a toxic work environment.

c. Blaming and Role Play: Adopting the roles of victim, villain, or hero can divert attention from the core issues at hand, creating a cycle of blame without resolution.

d. Collusion - "Ain't it Awful": When conversation turns into commiseration without an effort to find solutions, it's a sign of a lack of motivation to change.

e. Waiting to Rescue or Be Rescued: This passive approach holds back progress, as people wait for someone else to solve the problem for them.

2. COLLABORATION

Collaboration, on the other hand, is a focused, purpose-driven approach to working together:

a. Goals: Setting clear and measurable objectives keeps everyone aligned.

b. Actions and Plans: Outlining steps and responsibilities ensures that talk turns into action.

c. Partnership: Building trust and mutual respect enhances the ability to work together.

d. Aims and Process: Having both long-term aims and a defined process creates a roadmap for success.

e. Targets: Using SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) targets makes goals attainable.

f. Division of Effort: Properly allocating responsibilities ensures that everyone's strengths are utilized.

FINDING THE BALANCE

In the service economy, where advice is often seen as the product itself, there may be a tendency to value counsel too much and action too little. While discussion is undoubtedly crucial, it should not overshadow the importance of tangible delivery. The real challenge lies in finding a balance between process and product, where conversation shapes the direction, and collaboration turns ideas into reality.

Understanding the distinction between conversation and collaboration empowers us to utilize them in a complementary manner. This fosters a culture where talking leads to actionable plans, and planning turns into concrete results. In a world that's constantly demanding more, this balanced approach ensures that both dialogue and deeds hold their rightful place, leading to a more cohesive, productive, and innovative workplace.

In conclusion, both conversation and collaboration have their unique roles and must be balanced with insight and intention. By recognizing when to engage in thoughtful dialogue and when to transition into actionable collaboration, organizations can navigate the complex landscape of the service economy with agility and success.

Recalibration, The Dream Curriculum and finding Purpose

PROBLEM / NEED / PHENOMENA

In a world experiencing significant global and societal changes, individuals are grappling with existential questions, seeking deeper purpose and self-discovery as they approach mid-life. Recent reflections on our evolving world have intensified this pursuit, driving us towards a more balanced and holistic life approach.

Harmonizing our minds and bodies, embracing nature, and prioritizing health have become crucial. Popular solutions include activities like walking and swimming, offering both recreation and meditative experiences. Holidays and retreats provide respite and empowerment, symbolizing a collective yearning for self-understanding and a more meaningful human experience. Coaching, counseling, and therapy have gained traction, supporting individuals on this transformative journey. Embracing these changes is vital, as it fosters a society that values holistic well-being amid ongoing global challenges. By nurturing these shifts, we can navigate the changing world with resilience and grace.
