RED PILL OR BLUE PILL





IF THE SYSTEM HAS TAKEN YOUR ATTENTION AND YOUR INTENTION THERE IS NOTHING LEFT WHICH IS YOURS

Your mid-life crisis, strategic review, or next chapter, does not have to be a crisis but can be one of recalibration or indeed counterbalance. That’s want happens when you shift from productivity to purpose.

There are many books currently topping the best seller list about how live in a world which is increasingly dysfunctional and disappointing, monetising our attention and intention to ‘win’ by producing more and buying more before we die.

More alarmingly in pursuit of productivity we loose our personality, we become our profession and become what we do rather than who we are. Our left brain cranks out a rhythm, cookie cuts a pattern, repeats a behaviour for which it is rewarded whilst the right brain struggles to make sense of it all feeling that a tree is more than timber, animals are more than food, the sea is not a place for refuse, and our life is more than work.

The reason we have weekend and holidays is they make us more productive. Indeed some businesses have found that working 4 days per week instead of 5 or 6 can actually increase productivity and profit, as well as consumption. Time off work is simply to recharge the batteries ready to be reloaded into the system and discharged in pursuit of delivery of more stuff.

What if your next weekend or holiday was not simply trickle charging with serotonin, dopamine or endorphins just to be able to face the next challenge mindlessly taking instruction from social media, political propaganda or corporate evangelism, and soon the AI which will be your friend, coach, boss and task master.

TAKING THE RED PILL

In the 1999 science fiction film "the matrix," directed by the Wachowskis, the protagonist, Neo, is presented with a choice between two pills by the character Morpheus…

RED PILL: Taking the red pill will "awaken" Neo to the truth of reality, allowing him to see the world as it truly is, which is a simulated construct controlled by machines. Choosing the red pill means facing the often uncomfortable truth and the challenges that come with it.

BLUE PILL : Taking the blue pill will allow Neo to remain in the simulated reality of the Matrix, continuing to live in ignorance and comfort without the knowledge of the true nature of the world. It means choosing blissful ignorance over harsh reality.

The "red pill vs. blue pill" choice has since become a cultural metaphor, often used to represent the decision between confronting an uncomfortable or challenging truth (taking the red pill) and remaining in blissful ignorance (taking the blue pill).

RE CALIBRATION AND COUNTERBALANCE

We speak of work-life-balance but are they in balance? Isn’t work hard and play hard both hard? Is working on yourself, working on your hobbies, working on your relationships still just working? Is that it, simply endless hard + work?

In the backdrop of our fast-paced, technologically advanced lives, we often forget the essence of being human - to feel, to think, to connect, and to be in sync with our surroundings.
